Communications Communications – Communicates and provides the vehicles for effectively communicating the goals, activities, and results of EDAC and its committees to EDAC members and the industry.

Join us at the EDAC Mixer benefiting local charities on February 27!

The mixer will be held at the Savvy Cellar in Mountain View, CA. We're not asking for donations, but a portion of the proceeds from food and drinks will be donated a worthy local charity. February's charity is the Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF). More details are available on the EDAC web site.

EDAC hosted a major charity event, EDA: Back to the Future, benefiting the EDA Oral History Project at the Computer History Museum. The event, held on October 16, 2013, raised over $30,000 towards the continued development of the project. [Press release.] Information, photos and videos are available on the EDAC web site.

ECC Emerging Companies – Promotes the interests of companies whose annual revenue is less than $5M.

The Emerging Companies Committee is planning another exciting year of events with information especially useful for start-ups. Upcoming events include "Marketing Best Practices", and more installments of the popular EDAC - Jim Hogan series, including "Investments Fueled by the Upcoming Energy Boom" in the spring and" Alternative Sources of Funding for Emerging Companies" scheduled for the fall.

Previous installments of the EDAC - Jim Hogan series are available in the EDAC media library.

In September, 2013, the ECC, in cooperation with the Export Committee, hosted a seminar on export regulations. (See below for details) A recording of the event is available for EDAC members.

Export and Government Relations – Supports the interests of EDA in matters pertaining to product export.

In September 2013, the Export Committee, in cooperation with the Emerging Companies Committee, held an informative seminar on export regulations at the new EDAC offices in San Jose. Many smaller companies do not have the resources to track these complex and ever changing sets of export regulations, but ignorance of the laws is not an excuse. Non-compliance can be costly, with penalties ranging from significant fines to imprisonment.

This valuable seminar was recorded, and is available to members on the EDAC web site. A publicly available preview is available; EDAC members can view the full presentation. (An EDAC web site user ID, available to individuals at member companies, is required.) Members can also visit the Export Compliance Update, which reviews key export information for EDA companies.

Export controls were one of the topics in President Obama's 2010 State of the Union message. Larry Disenhof, Chair of the Export Committee, commented on this topic in a brief video.

Interoperability – Drives EDA standards and Quality for the benefit of the industry.

The Interoperability Committee met in December to update the EDAC OS Roadmap, based on the most recent information available from OS vendors. The roadmap helps EDA vendors and customers to determine which operating systems are best for design starts. While EDA vendors are free to make their own decisions regarding OS support, the OS Roadmap helps define a stable, interoperable environment for tools and support.

Phil Kaufman Award – Selects the recipients of the prestigious EDAC/CEDA Phil Kaufman Award to honor an individual who has had a demonstrable IMPACT on the field of electronic design through contributions in Electronic Design Automation (EDA).

The Phil Kaufman Award Committee is currently accepting nominations for this year's award. The nomination deadline is February 28, 2014. [Press Release.] If you would like to nominate someone who has had a demonstrable impact on electronic design, you can submit your nomination. [Additional information and nomination forms.]

License Management & Anti-Piracy – Provides a forum for members to identify and solve software licensing and piracy problems common to EDA vendors and their customers.

The committee met with Flexera in October 2013 to discuss our thoughts on external license reclamation. (External License Reclamation is a tool or procedure that attempts to force an application program to give up its licenses by applying an external action like process suspension or stoppage.) After some discussion, we concluded this is a very risky practice, and in general is not supported by EDA vendors. This document details the issues surrounding external license reclamation, and why the LMA committee does not support the practice. [Read the EDAC LMA committee position on external license reclamation.]

Market Statistics Service – Generates the quarterly EDA revenue report available to EDAC members.

The MSS report for Q3, 2013 was released in January, showing another quarter of solid growth for the EDA industry. Overall industry revenue was up 6.8% compared to Q3, 2012. [Press release.] Highlights of the Q3 report, along with highlights of the previous 4 quarters, are available on the EDAC web site MSS page. The full report is available to representatives from member companies.

Tradeshows – Represents the interests of EDA companies at the DAC (USA), DATE (Europe) and EDS Fair (Japan) tradeshows.

Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) is coming up! The advance program for this popular conference is now available for download. DATE 2014 will be held on March 24 through 28 in Dresden, Germany.

The 51st Design Automation Conference (DAC) will be held on June 1 through 5 in San Francisco, CA. This year, DAC is adding a new Automotive Track, bringing together researchers and practitioners from the automotive domain with their counterparts from the embedded systems & software (ESS) and electronic design automation (EDA) domains. DAC registration opens on March 27, 2014. Be There!
