exports from the United States of EDA software and services are controlled under
the Export Administration Regulations, administered by the U.S. Department of
Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS, formerly BXA). Whether you know
it or not, there are export regulations to which you must legally comply. Non-compliance
can be costly! The scope of controls and associated export licensing requirements
depends upon a particular product's export classification (ECCN) under the Export
Administration Regulations. Proper classification of products and services has
important implications for your business - a restrictive classification means
more paperwork, bureaucracy and time. The EDA Consortium has formed a task
force, known as the EDA Consortium Export Group, to educate the licensing officials
at BIS about our industry and the proper classification levels for our software
products. See our Export Control Success
Story. We have recently been focusing on the emerging issue of the
use of encryption in EDA software products. The group has put together a briefing
on the subject to promote discussion about future trends and the role of encryption
in EDA. Current members of the EDA Consortium Export Group are export managers
and technical representatives from Cadence, Mentor Graphics and Synopsys. We maintain
the following objectives: -
Pro-actively monitor actions at BIS
and other agencies to ensure that proposed regulations changes do not negatively
affect the EDA Industry. -
Offer training and advice to Consortium
member companies on export regulations. See our latest Feb. 2, 2006 Export
Control Update (pdf). -
