The recent global financial crisis and the downturn in the semiconductor business are unprecedented and have impacted the EDA industry. The electronics industry is in the midst of a transformation driven by technology and economics. The increased focus on capital efficiency requires closer collaboration and partnering across the ecosystem which designs and manufactures today’s electronics. In addition to delivering technology innovation to enable the continued progression of Moore’s Law, the EDA industry is challenged by our customers to lower the cost of semiconductor R&D to help make ICs and Systems ever smaller, faster, greener and - most importantly - cheaper.

The EDA Consortium represents the unified voice of our industry; it will take the collective leadership of EDAC to work together to solve customer challenges and promote EDA as a critical component of the semiconductor and electronics industries. Collectively through EDAC we need to communicate EDA’s intrinsic value to the greater marketplace.

Cadence has been strong proponent of EDAC since its inception and our employees are active in several of the EDAC committees. As part of EDAC, we need to continue addressing issues such as export control and compliance, software piracy, capital efficiency in a globalized environment, protection of intellectual property, nurturing innovation and investment in developing talent. EDAC has positively impacted government understanding to bring about policy changes, which in turn have facilitated EDA business. It is important for us to continue these efforts.

In addition to leading Cadence, I am the founder and Chairman of Walden International, a leading global venture capital firm. Over the years I have invested in numerous fabless semiconductor companies in different regions of the world. The combination of leading Cadence and being an experienced global venture capital investor gives me a unique background to address the challenges facing the EDA industry today.

I promise to serve as a dedicated contributor and passionate advocate for issues key to increasing our value to the electronics industry and increasing the value and level of respect we enjoy with customers and the financial community.

Thank you,
Lip-Bu Tan
